When purchasing a home, it is important to understand what is not visible; especially what might be present below ground. An oil tank inspection or tank sweep inspection provides insight if objects similar in size to that of an underground storage tank exist on the property. Having this useful information can save you thousands of dollars prior to taking ownership.

A site-specific scan to locate buried underground oil storage tanks uses various types of procedures and equipment. First, a visual scan of the property is completed to locate utilities, patchwork at foundation walls, discoloration at flue pipes, copper lines on the interior/exterior, vent/fill pipes, and any other identification items commonly used in oil tank searches. In addition to a visible scan, a magnetometer is used to scan approximately 6 feet below the ground. Two types of equipment will be used, including a Fisher TW-6 Cable and Pipe Locator and then a Schonstedt Maggie Magnetic Locator. These types of equipment are designed to locate ferrous metals beneath the earth’s surface.

The service includes:

-A visual scan noting patchwork, copper lines, fill/vent pipes, discoloration, and any other evidence that may suggest signs of a past oil storage tank.

-Use of a Magnetometer to include a sweep of the grounds in a grid pattern.

-A written report detailing all findings
