Teaneck is a township in Bergen County, NJ, and a suburb of the New York metropolitan area. As of the 2018 census, it has a population of approximately 40,625. Teaneck was created in 1895 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. In addressing the concerns of Englewood Township’s leaders, the new municipality was incorporated as a township, rather than as a borough. The exact origin of the town’s name is not known, but speculation has it that it is either Native American for “the woods”, or Dutch “tiene neck” meaning “neck where there are willows”. Teaneck is bordered by the Bergen County municipalities of River Edge, Hackensack, New Milford, Bergenfield, Englewood, Leonia, Ridgefield Park, and Bogota.
