Closter is a town in Bergen County, NJ with a population of approximately 8,525. The settlement of the area that is now known as Closter began in the 17th century by Englishmen. The Dutch came in the 18th century and named it Closter. It was originally pronounced “Klowster”. The meaning of the name is “a quiet place, monastery or cloister”.  In 1904, Closter became an incorporated municipality by an act of the New Jersey Legislature.
